The History of our Name

The name "Spreull" is said to be one of the Scottish surnames taken from Norman places. A surname of old standing in the west of Scotland. These of this name carry purses or palmer scripts in their arms. The Spruill arms is a golden chevron between three purses of cushions, denotes that the bearer was a man of great trust. The Spruill family was a very small one, only one family is given in the English and Scottish records.

The Spruill family from Scotland migrated to different parts of the world, often changing the spelling of the name as they went.   Although today you can find any spelling just about anywhere, the Spruill, Spruiell, Sprewell, and Spruell spellings are common in the Southern United States; Sproul, Sproule's are found in the North Eastern U.S., Canada and most likely originated in Ireland; Spurrell's are found in parts of England, Wales and New Foundland .

All the spellings are traced back to early Scotland and Walter Sprewell living in the late 1200's. There is a possible connection to the
Sporle Priory located in Norfolk, England.

Near the Paisley and Irvine road, just past the Crofthead mill are the ruins of Caldounhall.  It was situated on a steep bank, near the junction of the Couldon burn and the Levern.  This estate was long possessed by the distinguished family of Spreull.   - Rambles Around Glasgow

 The Ancient Spreull's

The Spreull's were an ancient Celtic family and members of the McFarlane Clan.  The McFarlane Clan had a turbulent history much of it stemming from association with the Earl's of Lennox.

There are several good sites of the McFarlane Clan History.  Researching these sites will give a good foundation for understanding the Spreull family's position throughout history.
